When the Skies Stay Bright: A Midsummer's Eve Bonfire

As the year gracefully rolls around to the most luminous night, we can't help but bask in the ethereal glow of the Nordic midsummer. An enchanting twilight that never fully gives way to darkness, a night that echoes the whisper of ancient traditions, and a resplendent celebration of summer solstice - oh, it truly is a magical time!

In the beautiful words of the Danish songstress, Alberte, "Nu kommer fuglene igen, Og lyset vælter pludselig ind" - "Now the birds are coming back, And the light suddenly pours in." Such lyrics echo the promise of the summer solstice, encapsulating the resurgence of life, light, and vibrancy that midsummer brings.

Nestled in our little corner of the world, the midsummer, or "Sankt Hans Aften", is an age-old tradition steeped in folklore and merriment. Peculiar as it may sound, this celebration involves a bonfire, often crowned with an effigy of a witch symbolically burnt to ward off evil. While it may seem like an odd practice to some, it's deeply rooted in our history, mirroring a striking blend of Christian and pagan traditions.

Yet, as with many traditions, we've given it a unique spin that aligns with our familial values and connection to nature. In the Veranda Vikings household, we honour midsummer by building our own bonfire – a delightful pyre formed from gathered woodland bric-a-brac. As the flames crackle and dance, there's no witch in sight, only the intoxicating aroma of burning wood and the flickering light illuminating our faces.

As we huddle around this fiery beacon, the warmth not only fends off the swarming mosquitoes but also creates a comforting glow amidst the ceaseless night hum of buzzing insects and the intermittent glow of darting fireflies. It’s a time to share stories, sing songs, and keep the ancient traditions alive.

While the bonfire blazes, we often recite verses from the Eddas, invoking the sagas and legends of old, intertwining them with our modern celebration. These poetic verses, passed down through the ages, serve as our heartfelt tribute to the past, a bridge to the spiritual realm, and a guide to understanding our roots.

Lastly, amidst the merriment, we remember that fire, like many elements, has always held a prominent place in rituals worldwide. A symbol of transformation and renewal, our midsummer bonfire not only links us to our past but ignites our hopes for the coming year.

As we prepare to embrace another midsummer eve, we invite you to find your own rituals, to celebrate this radiant night in a way that honours your roots, your connections, and your journey. From our family to yours, we wish you a midsummer filled with warmth, joy, and a touch of magic!
