Flora Danica in Full Bloom
Celebrating Scandinavian Botanical Legacy
We are embarking on a journey through the pages of the renowned Flora Danica, a complete botanical catalogue of ancient Scandinavian wild plants from the Age of Enlightenment. This monumental work, which took 123 years to compile, is a treasure trove of botanical wonders, and we feel both humbled and exhilarated to work with it.
We are meticulously digitizing the beautiful hand-colored illustrations from the Danish Royal Library's archives, restoring each one to bring out the vibrant details. Our aim is to transform these illustrations into high-quality graphic reprints and integrate them into our designs. Imagine the graceful motifs of flora on duvets, cozy plaids, and flowing dresses. Imagine composite arrangements of fruit trees in full bloom, like a snapshot of an autumnal harvest or the intricate variations of wild blackberries and brambles native to Scandinavia.
Today, we are elated to release our first pattern, a tribute to the ancient blackberries and brambles of Scandinavia (click here). Each thorny vine, each succulent berry has been rendered with meticulous attention to the original artistry.
And that's not all. We are extending an open invitation to designers to draw inspiration from the Flora Danica. Our first series of reinterpreted patterns, the 'Flora Danica Brambles' (click here), showcases the stunning potential of these designs, transforming centuries-old botanical illustrations into fresh, contemporary patterns.
This is a project steeped in respect for the past and brimming with creativity for the future. We hope you'll enjoy this journey into the heart of Scandinavian botanical heritage as much as we are!
